Director of Education

The Holocaust Memorial Center (HMC) seeks a Director of Education to provide creative and strategic leadership in all aspects of education within the Center and with schools throughout the State of Michigan. The successful candidate will contribute to making HMC the dynamic nexus for interdisciplinary Holocaust educational programming and instruction throughout Michigan. The Director of Education must be committed to a collaborative and innovative approach to developing visitor experiences for HMC’s diverse audiences. This senior level position involves supervising and supporting Education staff members, including: hiring, training, assigning/reviewing work, conducting performance evaluations, addressing work issues, approving timesheets, and setting work schedules.


  • Maintain a strong commitment to Holocaust education within the Center and throughout the State of Michigan.
  • Hire, train, and supervise growing Education Department staff.
  • Lead staff in setting and prioritizing individual and department-wide goals.
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team to achieve HMC’s goals and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with HMC’s CEO to establish a clear vision and direction for the Holocaust Memorial Center’s educational initiatives, including teacher training.
  • Oversee development and implementation of teacher trainings concomitant with state-mandated Holocaust and genocide education.
  • Oversee, contribute to, and support Exhibit and Library staff in developing the educational content of programs, events, materials, and online resources.
  • Develop and oversee department budget and monitor expenses.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager on events and programs.
  • Oversee the training, supervision, evaluation, and retention of museum docents.
  • Work with Holocaust Survivors and Speakers.
  • Oversee the collection and dissemination of statistics for all education-related activities.
  • Work with Development staff to steward fundraising for education initiatives, including drafting budget narratives for grant proposals.
  • Actively participate in and represent HMC’s interests in relevant meetings, seminars, conferences, and professional education opportunities.
  • Serve as a positive presence in the community, nurturing partnerships that support HMC’s mission to engage, to educate and to empower by remembering the Holocaust.


  • Master’s degree in education, business, or related field
  • Knowledge of Holocaust and Genocide Studies
  • 3+ years of experience in a supervisory role
  • Administrative and grant-writing experience desired
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills and proven ability to communicate well both orally and in written form with visitors and colleagues of different ages, interests, and backgrounds
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff while contributing to a positive, collaborative, and healthy work environment
  • Strong project planning, coordination, and evaluation skills
  • Proven ability to work well within deadlines on multiple and varied projects simultaneously
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Apps, Facebook required; familiar with Altru, Slack, other social media platforms desired
